Who Do You See?

What does the term audience mean?

Who are the audience?

What are the audience the told from this image? How are the audience told this?

What representations are created? How are these representations created?

How are the women represented in the text?

1. The representation of the the text establishes that women are always weaker than men

2. This is seen right after the shower scene, where bond overthrows the woman even tho she has a gun and he doesn't

3. This section tells the audience that men are physically and mentally always stronger than women, even when the women have weapons

4. Here we can see that the texts supports what Mulvey states, that they have no power or purpose other than for the visual enjoyment of the male viewer.

  • female no purpose other than sexual purpose
  • positioning on the bed provocative
  • walked behind him
  • costume, fitted, stereotyped, dress revealing,
  • bond: suit, respectable, formal
  • close up on her lips

  • Benett - Tames widow
  • reveals secrets - sexual advances - seduces her

  • over the shoulder - reveals her sexual position - van zoonen

  • Mise En Sen
  • very rich - opulent, identifies her class

  • Butler, performance of gender roles - heterosexual female role, - costume, make up, hair, vulnerable, position - man to save her
  • shot reverse shot - build up of violence and sexual dominance

In the film Specter women are seen as objects of desire. This is seen through the character from the opening scene. In the scene a woman positions herself on the bed in a provocative way for Bond's pleasure.
The woman is objectified through the way she performs the female gender role. She is wearing a tight fitting, revealing dress to make her look more attractive, Bond on the other hand is wearing a suit to make him look formal, and respectable.
The woman walking behind Bond tells the audience that he has to protect her because he is the "strong man" and she is the "weak woman"

Media Studies: RuPaul and identity

LO:

to investigate the principles behind theories.

to discuss theories.

to critically apply theories to texts

Your identity separates you from someone else

  • personality
  • gender
  • lifestyle
  • sexuality
  • culture
  • hobbies
  • clothing style
  • music button
  • religion
  • social class

Gauntlett:

- the wide range of representation of identities can help the audience to think ab their own identity

- identities like gender and sexuality are more fluid nowadays than they were in the past

Butler:

- Gender is a social construct and the way it is represented in media can hurt those tat do not fit into the heterosexual norms

Identity:

gender - gender norms are broken, DRAG artists - all identities are accepted

sexuality - make-up elements, clothing,, reinforcing the sexualisation of women -

personality - bright, bubbly -

lifestyle - extravagant, over the top

interest -DRAG, talents = typically feminine

appearance - important

religion - positivity, (positivity maybe doesn't show the reality)

roots - proud, is that the reality?

male: breaks gender norms

female: stereotypically represented, reinforcing sexualisation - sexualising themselves in their tight dresses

social values:

culture of america: no

Heterosexual norm: ew

Gauntletts theory applies to RuPauls drag race due to the fact that they are breaking gender norms. like, dressing up as women.

Butlers theory applies due to the fact that they are reinforcing stereotypes on women and femininity
